1429- Joan of Arc arrives at the siege of Orleans

1587- Sir Francis Drake sails into Cadiz, in Spain, and sinks the Spanish fleet, which is known as the singeing of the King of Spain’s beard

1661- Pope Clement X is elected

1672- Louis XIV and his French forces invade the Netherlands

1706- Jozef I becomes the ruler of Cologne and Bavaria
1784- Mozart’s ‘Sonata in B flat’ is premiered in Vienna (Image Right)

1910- The 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, visits Amsterdam, after his term

1916- The Easter Uprisings end in Ireland, with the Irish people leaving the post office in Dublin and surrender.

1930- The telecommunication line between Britain and Australia opens
1940- Norway’s king, Haakon, and his government, flee to Britain (Image Left)

1942- Jews are forced to wear a Jewish Star in the Netherlands

1945- 31, 601 people are liberated by the US Army from the Nazi concentration camp in Dachau

2011- Prince William and Kate Middleton (Now the Duchess of Cambridge) wed at Westminster Abbey


1803- James Brooke, a British explorer, and the first white Rajah of Sarawak, being that from 1841 to 1868
1818- Alexander II N Romanov, Tsar of Russia from 1855 to 1881 (Image Right)

1899- Duke Ellington, composer and pianist

1915- Donald Mills, one of the brother in the Mills Brothers band


1945- Adolf Hitler, then 56, marries Eva Braun, who was then 33

2011- The now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Princess Catherine, marry at Westminster Abbey
