On This Day 28th April

Hello everyone, 

Well, today certainly isn't the day to go mining, as two mines collapsed in West Virginia, on the same date, but it certainly is a good day to read todays edition of 'On This Day'

1192- Conrad I of Jerusalem, is assassinated two days after his title is confirmed by election (Image Left)

1770- Captain James Cook, and Sir Joseph Banks land at Botany Bay in Australia

1914- A coal mine in West Virginia collapses and 181 die

1924- A coal mine in West Virginia collapses, killing 119

1939- Hitler claims that the German and Polish non-attack treaty is still on

1941- The last of the British troops in Greece surrender

1952- Dwight D Eisenhower, the 32nd President of the united States, resigns as the Supreme Commander of NATO

1968- A 4 year old is strangled by 11 year old Mary Bell

1969- President of France, Charles de Gaulle

1996- Port Arthur Massacre  occurred, by gunman Martin Bryant, and killed 35 people, and injured 24. The perpetrator is now serving 35 life sentences, as well as 1035 years in prison, as a whole, over a range of charges including murder. He serves his term in Solitary Confinement, and is only allowed immediate family to visit him. He has no chance of parole, and is never to be released. (Bryant pictured right)
