1581- Francis Drake is knighted by Queen Elizabeth aboard Golden Hind at Deptford

1588- Christian IV succeeds Frederik as king of Denmark

1660- Charles II sends Declaration of Breda (a freedom of religion)

1686- King James II published Declaration of Indulgence

1687- King James II orders his declaration of Indulgence to be read out in English churches

1814- Napoleon abdicates in favour of his son

1818- Congress decides upon the US flag

1912- Chinese Republic proclaimed in Tibet

1917- US senate agrees to participate in WWI- (82-6)

1968- Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated at Memphis, Tennessee

1975- Microsoft is formed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen

1819- Queen Maria II of Portugal


1588- Frederik II, King of Denmark/Norway aged 53
1841- William Henry Harrison, the 9th president of America becomes the first president to die while in office. He dies at the age of 68, from pneumonia

1900- Edward VII assassinated

1968- Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated at 39
